About John
John was elected as the Member for Bunbury in
the West Australian Parliament in February 2005 and re-elected for a
second term in September, 2008 with an unprecedented 12.6% swing. In
the same month, John was named Minister for Local Government,
Heritage, Citizenship & Multicultural Interests.
John has extensive community and local
government experience having been elected Mayor of the City of Bunbury
in 1997 and re-elected for a further four-year term in 2001, with a
whopping 73.5 per cent majority vote. In addition to his eight years
as Mayor, he was a Councillor of the City of Bunbury for six years
from 1991 to 1997.
John has been involved in many affiliated
associations and boards in a variety of arenas, including education,
industry, development, tourism, recreation, environment and has been
instrumental in the formation of sister city relationships both in
China and Japan. He was recently honoured as the first ‘Westerner’
with an Honorary Citizenship of Jiaxing China and is an Honorary
Citizen of Setagaya Japan. In November 2005 John was honoured by the
Associazione Molise with a Gold Passport for his contributions.
His professional career includes two years with
the South West Development Commission as the Developmental Planner and
Projects Financial Consultant, seven years with the Department of
Commerce and Trade as the Senior Regional Trade Officer and eight
years as a partner in Bunbury Finance Pty Ltd.
John in married to Loretta and has two
daughters, Lisa and Deanna.
