Saving the Yarragadee
The Yarragadee Water
Supply Development proposal was environmentally unsound and threatened
the unique biodiversity of the South West.
Many leading scientists
warned that taking water from the Yarragadee Aquifer, on the scale
that was proposed, would be unsustainable for both the community and
the ecosystem of the Blackwood River Region.
John joined the very vocal
community to lobby the Carpenter Government on the dangers of the
proposal by speaking on the issue in Parliament several times. He
called on the Carpenter Government to postpone its proposal until a
comprehensive study into the impacts was done.
On May 15, 2007 the
proposal was shelved and a decision was made to build a desalination
plant in Binningup. That announcement was a great relief to the mass
of opponents to the proposal, including the powerful Friends of the
Yarragadee lobby group.
