Freeing young people from nursing homes
In 2005, there were 6500 young people living in
aged care facilities throughout Australia. By the end of 2007, it was
rising to 10,000.
This is an issue Bunbury MLA John Castrilli has
taken on for the South West by trying to establish a facility catering
for young people who would otherwise have to live in an aged care
home.
It has been a long, windy and bumpy road but
finally, a project has been committed to between the State Liberal
Government and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA.
The facility will cater to young people who are
unable to receive the rehabilitative support and services they need,
and are often faced with social isolation, living with frail aged
people with different generational needs, expectations and wants.
John has worked on this issue since 2003 after
becoming aware of several young South West people inappropriately
housed in aged care facilities or living in Perth away from their
family and support structures.
John is delighted that the State Government has
granted more than $700,000 to the MS Society of WA to purchase land
near Bunbury to build this much-needed facility. See below for more
details...
